Growing Gardeners was originally founded under the name Midlothian Garden Services in 2009.
It began after it was recognised that there was a growing need for a community gardening service that could not only benefit residents but also confront the high rate of local youth unemployment by offering training and employment opportunities to young people. All income from this gardening service would be put straight back into the enterprise and used to provide resources for our young staff and support Y2K youth projects.
Operated by Y2K, the aspiring social enterprise was granted funds by Leader to run a small gardening team with the initial aim of providing local residents and organisations with an alternative and more affordable gardening service.
In 2012, we received generous funding thanks to The Coalfields Regeneration Trust to buy a brand-new business van that the whole community would recognise. At that time, we were located at McSence Business Park until we moved to the Y2K building in 2013.
From 2012 onwards the team carried out many grand sized projects like the full makeover of the Dalkeith Welfare Hall garden, established a growing site at Salisbury View sheltered housing home (Mayfield), worked with other community groups in beginning a growing space at Vogrie Country Park, the creation of a decking area, barbecue and growing beds in the Y2K garden and much more.
Although we are aiming to achieve a higher level of self-sustainability through our gardening service income we simply couldn’t run without the funding and backing from the various funders throughout the years, we thank them for their support.
